Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating, but not due to body temperature. This sweating most often occurs in the armpits, the palms of the hands, or soles of the feet, but symptoms can occur anywhere on the body. Hyperhidrosis is not life-threatening, but it can be a constant source of discomfort and embarrassment. Fortunately, hyperhidrosis symptoms can be managed with treatment.
Hyperhidrosis Treatments
Hyperhidrosis is caused by hyperactivity in the sweat glands. Therefore, effective hyperhidrosis treatment is targeted at reducing sweat gland activity in the affected areas. For mild to moderate cases, patients may be able to find relief with prescription antiperspirants. However, one of the most effective hyperhidrosis treatments is the injection of Botox® into the affected areas. Botox® can block the nerve signals that trigger sweating, effectively minimizing the symptoms of hyperhidrosis for a few months at a time. At times, oral medication can be useful.
