Psoriasis Explained

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by dry, red, scaly plaques on the skin. These patches of skin may also become itchy, painful or inflamed. Psoriasis is caused by a disorder in the skin cells that causes them to multiply much faster than normal. The buildup of skin cells causes visible psoriasis symptoms. As a chronic skin disorder, psoriasis cannot be fully cured. Instead, treatment is focused on minimizing psoriasis flare ups and managing the symptoms when flares occur.

Psoriasis Treatments

Psoriasis treatment is intended to reduce itching, dryness and inflammation in the affected areas. For patients with minor symptoms, we may recommend topical prescription creams to heal the skin. More severe cases may be able to benefit from oral medications or injectable medications, which stifle the body’s overactive immune response that causes symptoms. Some patients are candidates for light-based therapy.
