Skin Cancer Is Cancer: Why Early Detection – And Expert Care – Matters

When many people hear the term “skin cancer,” they often think of it as something small, like a harmless spot that can be removed and forgotten. But the reality of the condition can be much more serious.

When many people hear the term “skin cancer,” they often think of it as something small, like a harmless spot that can be removed and forgotten. But the reality of the condition can be much more serious.

If left untreated, skin cancer can worsen, spread, and become life-threatening. That is why regular skin checks with board-certified dermatologists are so important

At Florida Dermatology Specialists, we approach skin cancer care with the urgency and expertise it deserves, detecting cancer early, delivering precise treatment, and safeguarding your skin health at every stage.

Understanding The Risk

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and one in five Americans will develop it by the age of 70. Years of sun exposure or tanning bed use are the most common causes of the disease. Still, other factors, including family history of skin cancer, fair skin, or a weakened immune system, may also increase the likelihood of skin cancer developing.

There are three main types of skin cancer:

  • Basal cell carcinoma: A shiny bump, pink patch, or sore that won’t heal, that is sometimes pigmented. This grows slowly and rarely spreads, but can invade surrounding tissue if left untreated.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: A red, scaly patch or firm nodule that may bleed, crust, or resemble a wart. This can grow faster than basal cell carcinoma and has a small risk of spreading to other parts of the body.
  • Melanoma: A new or changing spot or mole that can grow quickly and spread to lymph nodes or organs, making early detection critical. Watch for the ABCDEs – Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6 millimeters, and Evolving characteristics.

Because each type of skin cancer behaves differently -- and some can grow or spread quickly -- early detection and timely treatment are critical.

The Gold Standard In Skin Cancer Treatment

For patients diagnosed with skin cancer, choosing the proper treatment is essential. To address melanoma, we generally remove the cancer through excision. Basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, however, is often treated through Mohs surgery, a minimally invasive, tissue-sparing procedure.

At Florida Dermatology Specialists, double board-certified dermatologists with fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery, including practice founder Dr. Richard Krathen and Dr. Benjamin Witkoff, perform this advanced procedure with precision and care.

During Mohs, the surgeon removes the skin cancer one layer at a time, examining each section under a microscope before moving on to the next. This meticulous approach protects healthy skin while maximizing cure rates and preserving appearance.

The surgeon usually closes the wound during the procedure. In some cases, nearby skin may be used to create a flap or graft, or the wound may be allowed to heal naturally.

Recovery is generally smooth, with minimal discomfort, and patients can typically resume normal activities within a few days.
