Basal Cell Carcinoma in Palm Beach Gardens & Stuart, FL

What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a type of skin cancer that affects the skin, where the tumor cells mimic the basal layer of the epidermis (the top layer of the skin). Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, and most often develops on the face, neck and other areas that are frequently exposed to the sun. This is because, like other types of skin cancer, BCC is caused by the ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure that damages the skin cells.  There are different variants, or growth patterns, of basal cell carcinoma: superficial, nodular, micronodular, morpheaform, infiltrative, and fibroepithelioma of Pinkus.  These growth patterns may predict tumor behavior and extent of spread into surrounding tissue.

How is Basal Cell Carcinoma Treated?

Although basal cell carcinoma is quite common, it can still be aggressive, and should therefore be treated promptly to minimize skin damage and extent of spread into surrounding tissue. Treatment depends on location on the body and the subtype of basal cell carcinoma.  Simple destruction, called electrodessication and curettage, surgical excision, and Mohs surgery are the most commonly used methods.  At times, topical therapy, cryotherapy, or radiation therapy may be employed.  Basal cell carcinoma very rarely spreads inside the body, but can certainly cause local tissue destruction into skin, muscle, cartilage, and rarely even bone.

How Much Does Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment Cost?

The cost of basal cell carcinoma treatment at Florida Dermatology Specialists can vary depending on the procedures involved and the extent of treatment needed. In most cases, your treatment may be eligible for coverage by health insurance. During your initial consultation, we will develop a personalized treatment plan and assess your insurance coverage to determine the exact cost of treatment that you will be responsible for.

What Can I Expect from Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment?

Your basal cell carcinoma treatment will depend on the size and location of your tumor and the treatment approach that is best for you. With advanced treatment techniques like Mohs surgery, we can minimize any damage to your healthy skin tissue while eliminating cancerous growths. There is a high chance of a new basal cell carcinoma arising in the future, so patients are encouraged to protect the skin from sun exposure and continue monitoring with regular full skin examinations.
